Which software video encoder should I use?
OBS Studio is the most popular choice — it is free, open-source, and supports all major platforms. xSplit Broadcaster is a solid alternative with a polished UI. For Wowza-based streaming, use Flash Media Live Encoder. For Smooth Streaming to Microsoft IIS servers, use Expression Encoder 4 PRO. How do I connect my encoder to a Server Room RTMP server?
You will need your RTMP URL (in the format rtmp://address:port/appname), stream name, username, and password — all available in your Server Room account dashboard or setup email. Enter these in your encoder's stream or output settings. Our individual encoder tutorials walk through every field with screenshots.
What video bitrate and format should I use?
For live streaming, H.264 video is universally supported and recommended. Use 2500–4000 kbps for 720p and 4000–6000 kbps for 1080p. Your total bitrate (video + audio) must not exceed your available upload bandwidth. For audio, MP3 stereo at 44100 Hz and at least 96 kbps is recommended alongside H.264 video.
Why does my encoder connect but viewers see a black screen or buffering?
The most common causes are a bitrate that exceeds your upload speed, an incorrect stream name or mount point, or a codec not supported by the server. Reduce your video bitrate first, then double-check your RTMP URL, stream key, and credentials against your Server Room dashboard. Contact our support team via live chat if the issue persists.
Can I stream to multiple destinations at the same time?
OBS Studio supports multi-destination streaming via plugins such as Multiple RTMP Outputs. On the server side, Server Room's Wowza plans support simultaneous HLS, RTMP, and RTSP delivery to all your viewers from a single incoming stream.
